Overview

DOT Update Service was created to automate the process of downloading files from the U.S. Department of Transportation and process the files in a specific manner for our customer.

The solution consists of a Microsoft Windows service, Control Panel application for managing settings and monitoring activity, and a website for looking up customers and building mailing lists.

Background

Prior to having the DOT Update Service, the client would receive CD Roms on a quarterly basis. That data was then manually "cleaned" to validate addresses, remove certain customers and then imported into Lotus Notes. After the data was in Notes, the customer further processed the data to build mailing lists and other reports.

Updates were provided by the DOT on a quarterly basis via CD Rom and required manually importing the data into Lotus Notes and then cleaning up the data.

With the DOT Update Service solution developed by GL2, the client now receives automatic daily updates from the Department of Transportation. The solution cleans the data and imports it into both SQL Server and Lotus Notes. It also builds a mailing list which can be sorted to match whatever criteria the client wishes to mail to.

Technical Details

Platform: Windows Server 2003
Technologies: VB.Net, SQL Server, Lotus Notes, Proposion N2N, XML, Windows Services, ASP.Net, Microsoft Access, Microsoft Excel.

Development Cycle

After the initial meeting with the client to discuss requirements, it took approximately 23 days to create the initial SQL database, Lotus Notes interfaces and the web application.

Once the web application was installed, the customer could use it to look up their customers and build mailing lists. At this point we proceeded in developing the Windows service and control panel applications which automated the processes.

The Windows service and control panel were delivered to the client approximately four months after our initial meeting. Since that time the customer has performed daily updates from the Department of Transportation.
